Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Skills Bootcamps programme. For anything not covered below, the team can be reached through the contact page.
What are Skills Bootcamps?
Skills Bootcamps are flexible, intensive training courses of up to 16 weeks that focus on building sector-specific digital skills. They were developed as part of the UK Government's Lifetime Skills Guarantee and Plan for Jobs, in partnership with employers, education providers and local authorities. Each bootcamp concludes with a guaranteed job interview with a relevant employer.
How much do they cost?
Skills Bootcamps are provided at no cost for learners who meet the eligibility criteria and are accepted onto a specific programme. Employers wishing to enrol existing staff can do so at a 70% discount on standard course fees.
Who is eligible?
The programme is open to adults aged 19 and over. Specific eligibility requirements may vary between bootcamps, but in general, applicants should have the right to work in England, access to a computer with an internet connection and a willingness to commit to the programme schedule. Some courses may require additional qualifications such as GCSE Mathematics at grade C or above.
Do I need prior experience in technology?
Many bootcamps are designed for complete beginners and do not require any prior coding or technical experience. Some more advanced programmes, particularly in areas like cybersecurity or AI, may have specific prerequisites. Individual course listings provide full details on required knowledge and skills.
How are the bootcamps delivered?
Bootcamps use a blended learning approach that combines online self-paced materials with scheduled live sessions, webinars, one-to-one coaching and practical project work. This format is designed to accommodate learners with existing work or personal commitments. Some programmes also include face-to-face sessions at specific university locations.
Which universities deliver the programmes?
The IoC consortium includes 13 university partners: Aston University, Bath Spa University, the University of Bath, Birmingham City University, Durham University, Edge Hill University, the University of Gloucestershire, the University of Huddersfield, Manchester Metropolitan University, Northumbria University, the Open University, Teesside University and the University of the West of England Bristol. Additional partners may be added as the programme evolves.
What happens after I complete a bootcamp?
On successful completion, every participant receives a guaranteed interview with a relevant employer. The IoC's engagement and delivery partners work to match graduates with organisations that are actively recruiting for digital talent. Many graduates have gone on to secure roles in technology within a short time of completing their bootcamp.
How can employers get involved?
Employers can engage with the programme in several ways: hiring from the graduate talent pool, enrolling existing employees at a discounted rate or contributing to curriculum design. All employer matching and engagement services are provided free of charge. More information is available on the employers page.
Will there be future bootcamps?
The IoC Skills Bootcamps programme may launch new cohorts in the future as funding and demand allow. Interested learners and employers are encouraged to register their interest through the contact page to receive updates when new programmes become available.
